Portrait of John Napier in the Processional Frieze

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery commisioned William Hole to decorate the Main Hall of its purpose-built building. He produced a pageant of notable Scots which runs round all four sides of the hall. It starts with early times. Taking up the rear is Carlyle the historian, who believed in the improving effect on the public of studying great lives. John Napier can be glimpsed on the southern section.
